Structure Isolation and Earthing Faults
Two of the most common reasons for the failure of a CP system to adequately protect a structure are 1: a lack of electrical isolation and 2: an inadvertent connection to copper earthing systems. It follows that regular testing must be carried out to ensure isolation remains effective and CP systems operate as intended.
If a cathodically protected structure must be earthed a number of options present themselves, these include the installation zinc earth electrodes in lieu of copper, and the installation of purpose designed decoupling devices such as polarisation cells and surge diverters.
